MATH 2230 — Theoretical Linear Algebra and Vector Calculus I
General Information
Designed for students who have been extremely successful in their previous calculus courses and for whom the notion of solving very hard problems and writing careful proofs is highly appealing, MATH 2230-MATH 2240 provides an integrated treatment of linear algebra and multivariable calculus at a higher theoretical level than in MATH 2210-MATH 2220. Topics covered in MATH 2230 include vectors, matrices, and linear transformations; differential calculus of functions of several variables; inverse and implicit function theorems; quadratic forms, extrema, and manifolds; multiple and iterated integrals.

Workload and General Advice
- The workload is insane in the following sense: the course moves very fast, and every single lecture presents a huge amount of information.
- Many concepts are introduced but not elaborated on, and students are expected to explore those concepts more deeply in homework and discussions.
- Given the sheer number of new concepts and the depth of understanding required beyond lecture, it is very hard to keep up without spending 10+ hours per week on the class (rumor has it that people used to spend 30+ hours per week).
- Do not come into this class with an AP Calculus background and expect to do well automatically. This might be THE hardest class you can ever take at Cornell as a freshman. The upside, however, is that the class is usually curved to an A- or A median.
- One of the benefits of taking this class is that you will find almost any 4000-level class easy after taking it.
